Brilliant News for Bridlington Hospital

We; the Save/Support Bridlington Hospital Campaign Group; firmly believe that we have played an extremely big part in the; Scarborough NHS Trust obtaining there grant; we are not taking anything away from; Chief Executive: Ms Alison Guy who we fully believe is doing a remarkable job under the circumstances given the amount of time she as been in her position; congratulations are in order. The amount of letters and e-mails sent out to various Government Organizations, Trusts and PCT’s, Parliamentary Officials, Councillors throughout the East Riding of Yorkshire and our very own MP the Rt. Hon. Greg Knight by the: Save/Support Bridlington Hospital campaigners have played a significant part; the none stop campaigning and the pressures put upon these organisations makes everyone aware of the problems within this deprived area; Campaigning works along with People Power; there is still much work to do within the Bridlington Hospital and we as a group will monitor all such changes.

Another issue; the Lifts within Bridlington Hospital which have been out-of-order for over 12 months are finally being repaired and should be fully operational and efficient by the end of February 2004 this is more good news. Let’s hope the Scarborough NHS Healthcare Trust keeps up the good work.

£10,000,000+ AWARD DELIGHTS TRUST

Staff and Board members of Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Healthcare NHS Trust are today celebrating after receiving their biggest-ever funding injection.

At the Board meeting of the North and East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire Strategic Health Authority yesterday, six out of seven bids for developments at the Scarborough Trust were given the go-ahead. This means that a total of over ten million pounds will be invested in the health trust in the near future.

Said Chief Executive Alison Guy; "It is impossible to over-estimate the enormous benefits that this investment will bring to this area. It is wonderful news for Bridlington and Scarborough, and we are very grateful that the Health Authority has supported us. It demonstrates that not only do they appreciate the need for this investment, but also that they have the confidence in this organisation to deliver the improvements necessary. That in itself is a great morale-booster for our staff, who have worked incredibly hard recently to make this trust the best-performing in the area. That splendid record is down to the people who work here, and the fact that we have been granted this huge sum of money is a real vote of confidence in our work."

The bids that went before the Board of the SHA were for developments in Endoscopy; MRI scanning facilities and additional operating theatres; an aseptic suite in Pharmacy; improvements to the electricity infrastructure at Scarborough Hospital; the remote-linking of Bridlington Radiography Department to Scarborough; replacement boilers at Bridlington; and an enhancement of ITU facilities at Scarborough. The only unsuccessful bid was the latter, and it is hoped that we will find some way of funding this.

Staff was told about the success of the latest bids at a special emergency briefing session held in the lecture theatre. Said Alison Guy; "It's a real pleasure to have to schedule a special meeting to pass on good news to all the people who've made this possible."

Now that funding is assured, detailed planning will commence on all the schemes.

The most recent major investment at the Trust was the £2.4m Sterile Service Unit. That building is now complete and was officially 'handed over' to the Trust last week. It is expected to be fully equipped and working during April.

The successful bids, which total £10.4m, were as follows:

ON THE BRIDLINGTON HOSPITAL SITE:

DIGITAL IMAGING: RADIOLOGY AT BRIDLINGTON HOSPITAL: £300,000

This funding will enable a digital link to be established between Bridlington and Scarborough Hospitals. This is state-of-the-art technology and builds on the investment that has already been put into radiology equipment at Bridlington recently. It will:

Allow easy access to Consultant opinion, thereby improving patient care
reduce the need for staff to travel between sites
Facilitate access to images for other consultants
Increase clinical links between Multi Disciplinary Team members
Assist Bridlington MIU to consult with A&E specialists at SGH, permitting both to view images

REPLACING BOILERS AT BRIDLINGTON HOSPITAL: £600,000

This funding will allow for the replacement of the existing coal-fired boilers with gas-fired models, increasing efficiency and decreasing running costs.

ON THE SCARBOROUGH HOSPITAL SITE:

ENDOSCOPY: £2m

Replacing the old facility will improve the privacy and dignity of patients throughout the department, and ensure that health and safety and infection control regulations can be met. In addition it will provide:

The additional space required for clinical staff to carry out procedures
Areas for the safe storage of endoscopic equipment
A modern facility in which to provide best quality service
An additional theatre (two instead of the current one), this enabling the treatment of more patients
The opportunity to develop the current range of services to meet emerging demand.
Suitable changing facilities
A dedicated waiting area.

MRI: part of £6m bid

A dedicated facility to house a new MRI scanner will be built adjacent to the X-ray department. It will:

provide a full range of Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans (whereas the current MRI mobile unit can only provide a limited range of scans)
be more accessible to patients
allow waiting lists and times to be kept to a minimum

TWO ADDITIONAL OPERATING THEATRES AT SGH: part of above bid

Two additional theatres will be built above the newly-created MRI suite, adjoining the current theatres on the first floor of the Trust.

The new theatres will:

Ensure that one theatre is available at all times to accommodate emergency surgery, preventing potential clashes between emergency and elective procedures
§ Provide additional capacity, so that routine maintenance and refurbishment can be undertaken in any of the other theatres

Ensure compliance with health and safety and infection control regulations
provide an improved recovery area
enable the treatment of more patients, thus keeping waiting times down avoid the need to refer patients elsewhere due to insufficient theatre capacity

ASEPTIC SUITE (Pharmacy): £300,000

The approval of this bid will enable the provision of an aseptic suite for the pharmaceutical preparation of ready-to-use doses of chemotherapy therapeutic agents. This is needed for our continued accreditation as a Cancer Unit. This will ensure that the pharmacy service continues to support the administration of chemotherapy locally, thereby avoiding the need for some patients to travel to Hull.

INCREASED ELECTRICAL INFRASTRUCTURE AT SCARBOROUGH HOSPITAL: £1,200,000

This investment will upgrade the energy capacity so that we can not only comfortably meet existing demand, but will have the ability to meet the additional needs of future developments.
