Meeting: With Rt. Hon Greg Knight MP; Cllr R. Harrap & Mick Pilling S.S.B.H.C.Group

The Future of: Bridlington Hospital Services; the Ambulance Service & the re-view @ 4 Regional Hospitals

On Friday 27 th May 2005; a pre-arrange meeting took place @ 7.00pm Bridlington Conservative Club between the Rt. Hon. Greg Knight MP, Councillor Richard Harrap and Mick Pilling (Chairman) Save/Support Bridlington Hospital Campaign Group.

On the agenda was:

  • Bridlington Hospital Services ; Maternity Unit, Minor Injuries Unit, Admissions & the future of the Macmillan Unit which is under P.C.T. re-view
  • Bridlington Ambulance Service ; which is not meeting Government Response Time Targets
  • The re-view of (4) Hospitals within our region ; Withernsea, Hornsea, Driffield & Bridlington Macmillan Unit.

The meeting lasted approx 1 hr & 10 mins and a lengthy discussions was held regarding the above; Mr Knight MP will be in due course be holding talks with Ms Jane Barnes (Chief executive) of TENYAS about response times in our area, also regarding the way so many patients are transported to Scarborough Hospital and Hull Royal. He believes that Bridlington Hospital is under-utilised regarding admissions; we also discussed the possibility of bed blocking? How the Minor Injuries will cope with the influx of holiday makers and visitors, now that it is Nurse Practitioner Led!

Also why? Are so many Ambulances travelling back from Scarborough with Lights Flashing & Horns sounding; that's right they cannot meet the demand of Bridlington!

Also discussed were the Yorkshire Wolds & Coast Primary Healthcare Trust and its failure to give adequate answers to the people of East Yorkshire about vital changes which could affect so many people within this area; approx 100,000 patients, visitors & residents; the re-views which are planned at 4 Hospital; Withernsea, Hornsea, Driffield & Bridlington's Macmillan Unit; and the possible closure of Hornsea Cottage Hospital; Mr Knight MP along with other MP's will be meeting and discussing the very issue in the coming months.

All the meetings which have been held; have been fruitless; No answers given to vital questions; now people are told it could be early 2006 before any decisions are given; this will then be approx 18 months of keeping residents within this area in limbo. Nothing more than ludicrous and preposterous!

A call for resignations would be a better idea; oust out all the dead wood and start again!

The Maternity Unit remains closed at weekends from; 4.30pm Friday to 08.30am Monday morning and expectant mothers are still expected to travel to Scarborough at weekends which as now been going on for some considerable time now? The Maternity Services in Bridlington as now been suffering for the last 3 years and not much improvement as been made in this time; Mr Knight MP plans to look into this scenario and take it up with Ms Alison Guy in due course.

Many other things were discussed briefly and these will be on the agenda at our next meeting planned in approx 3 to 4 weeks.

Yours truly,

Mick Pilling
