£65M CANCER CENTRE PLANS GET GO-AHEAD @ Castle-Hill Hospital

East Riding: Plans for a £65m Cancer Centre at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham have been backed by planning officials.

The state-of-the-art Oncology and Haematology Unit has been approved by East Riding Council, subject to conditions.

They include drawing up a strategy to protect an aquifer beneath the site and finalising building materials.

Among the Centre's facilities will be an extra 116 beds, which will help reduce waiting times for treatment.

Planning committee member; Councillor Peter Faulkner said; the development would make Castle Hill a "Centre of Excellence".

Nerissa Vaughan, director of planning for Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "This scheme represents the largest investment in health in this region for 50 years and will be C omplete by 2008."
