HOSPITALS   Officially failed to boost the number of routine operations last year - despite a £5billion cash injection for the NHS.

Just 1,000 more planned operations were performed in 2004/5, resulting in a total of 5,446,000. The improvement is so paltry it is officially recorded as a 0% rise.

Tory Health spokesman Andrew Lansley fumed: "The £5bn increase is not getting through to the frontline.  It is being eaten up by bureaucracy, waste and Government improved costs."

VALUE:  The Department of Health's annual report also reveals the number of emergency op's climbed 4.7% to 4,474,000. It pushed the over-all number of admissions up 2.1% to more than nine million.

Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt has admitted the NHS needs to deliver better value from the budget's extra 7% a year. She said: "It is vital that we deliver maximum benefit from this funding."

Ms Hewitt has now ordered chiefs to find savings of £6.5bn annually to channel on to wards. Last night Department of Health spokesman claimed routine hospital admissions did not grow because GP Surgeries were treating more people.
