THE TRADE UNION CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE NHS

At a meeting on 11 July 2006 attended by health unions, including Amicus, the BMA, RCN and RCM, there was unanimous support for unity to save our NHS from damaging tidal waves of change.

Noting a remarkable decline in the quality of consultation between government and unions representing clinicians and support staff, NHS unions decided a plan of action, which included TUC General Secretary, Brendan Barber seeking meetings with the PM and Secretary of State for Health.

There is a shared belief that MPs are unaware of the extent of damage to staff morale and client/patient care brought about by instability arising from government driven reforms.

The instability is worsened by drastic measures introduced by many NHS trusts to tackle deficits, and the impact of top-slicing.

This is why NHS unions will be briefing MPs ahead of the summer recess and are planning a co-ordinated parliamentary lobby soon after MPs return to Westminster in the early autumn.

Plans are also underway for a TUC national event involving all health unions early in 2007.

Amicus will be at the heart of this campaign that seeks to re-establish the NHS as a 'good news story', building on the very best traditions that deliver outstanding services and innovation efficiently, coupled with the dedication shown by the workforce.

Amicus Assistant General Secretary for the Public Sector, Gail Cartmail said: ‘Number 10 appears to have its foot on the pedal for the sake of political dogma. The NHS needs a period of stability.'

‘Frontline staff through to top management all agrees that the NHS is in turmoil and patient care is being jeopardised. The Government is risking throwing the baby out with the bath water.'
