Scrutiny Committee Overwhelming Vote for NO CHANGE IN SERVICES

As you are no doubt aware at this moment in time; there is a consultation process taking place at the Bridlington Hospital regarding its future.

On the 7th March 2007 at the Leisure World in Bridlington; a meeting took place by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Joint Scrutiny of Health Committee; chaired by Councillor Blackie & Councillor Blake-James; the meeting was arranged by Helena Coates of the East Riding Council.

The committee heard evidence from many people about the workings of the Bridlington Hospital and the proposed closure of certain services; on the agenda was the Minor Injuries Unit which is now closed overnight 9pm to 9am; the Maternity Services; and the 6 bed Cardiac Monitoring Unit.  The Scarborough NHS Trust put its case forward for changes to services in a hope they could remove them and take them to Scarborough Hospital; present from the Scarborough NHS Healthcare Trust were; Iain McInnes Chief Executive; Mike Collier; Suzanne Carr; Dr Earl Haworth Consultant.  Also present David Pinder Health Development Manager.

The committee heard all the evidence then came to a vote:

1. The committee took a vote to accept Option 1 in the consultation document; Cardiac Monitoring Unit/Acute Medical Services they are to remain fully working and operational at Bridlington Hospital - No Change to Services at Bridlington Hospital; unanimous vote.

2. The committee took a vote to accept Option 1 in the consultation document; Maternity Unit to remain fully working at Bridlington Hospital - No Change to Services at Bridlington Hospital; unanimous vote.

3. The Minor Injuries Unit now closed overnight 9pm to 9am; the Scarborough NHS Trust are to reopening the MIU 24/7 in due course hopefully April 2007 with the help of the on-call-doctor and the recruitment of Staff; Scrutiny Committee to monitor this decision

Conclusion: The Council would wish to support Option 1 and would urge the Trust to seek remedies to surmount their issue around clinical safety and sustainability, and to provide services appropriate to the growing and vibrant town of Bridlington.

Mick Pilling......This decision made on all three Services by the Scrutiny Committee are very welcome by the people of Bridlington.
