Dear Mr Pilling

REQUEST UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000

Thank you for your enquiry about the number of expectant mothers who have given birth to babies in ambulances while travelling from Bridlington to Scarborough.

I am sorry but we are unable to provide you with this information. This is because the data captured in our Computer-Aided Dispatch system only allows us to compile reports based on the ‘chief complaint’ recorded for each 999 call received. All calls relating to pregnancy would be recorded as ‘pregnancy/child-birth/miscarriage’. If a baby was delivered in the ambulance this would be recorded on the patient report form. To examine each patient report form completed by crews working in the North and East Yorkshire area individually for the two-year period you specify would be extremely labour intensive.
As you may be aware there are limitations to the obligations placed upon public bodies by the FOI Act. Section 12 of the FOI Act 2000 stipulates that there is no obligation to comply with a request for information where the total cost of doing so would exceed ‘the appropriate limit’. In the case of public bodies such as the NHS, the ‘appropriate limit’ has been set at £450 with a rate of £25 per hour (equating to 18 hours’ effort in total).

Yours sincerely

Hester Rowell

Executive Officer to Martyn Pritchard, Chief Executive
